School of Global Studies

Andrew Francis Pickup Global Citizens Award

Andrew Pickup was an extremely popular member of the Global Studies community, much loved by his peers and a highly regarded doctoral researcher in the School. He tragically passed away during doctoral fieldwork in South Africa and his parents have generously endowed the award in his name. This fitting tribute to Andrew’s memory will have a lasting and transformative impact on the School and on future generations of its students.

The award will be made available to Global Studies postgraduate taught students who are undertaking a Dissertation with Placement. Rather than fund just one winner, the School has agreed to award bursaries of up to £500 to several students. In allocating the award, an assessment panel will take into account a combination of the use of funds, academic excellence of the applicant, and financial need.

Organisation  Non Profit Organisation WELgee

'I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Andrew Pickup Award, which allowed me to complete a research placement in Japan at NPO WELgee, based in Tokyo. This placement was a crucial aspect of my research, which focused on understanding the emergin g complementary pathway for asylum seekers and refugees in Japan, co created by NPOs and the private sector. Read Mami's Bursary report

Organisation – The Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI)

TFirst of all, the Andrew Pickup Award allowed me to carry out this placement with the tranquillity to know that all my expenses were taken care of, both regarding transportation and accommodation. Not only was I able to visit Oxford, get to know the team and my supervisor, OPHI’s Director, Sabina Alkire, but also I was able to resign to my work at the Cafe for the whole placement’s duration, enabling me to fully and solely focus on both my placement and my dissertation. Without the bursary I would not have been able to go and visit the organisation, losing the opportunity to make the most out of the experience of working for a highly renowned organisation. Read Fourcade's Bursary report

Ysabella St Amant

Organisation – The FAIR Shop

Thanks to the generosity of the Andrew Pickup Award, I was able to further devote myself to the demands of my dissertation research this summer. This summer I secured a placement with The FAIR Shop, an ethical and sustainable fashion boutique that is one of the oldest shops of its kind in the UK. I worked in the shop in a sales assistant role for eight weeks between June and August 2023. The funding I received from the award went towards purchasing business cards, securing train fare to London to attend the Just Around the Corner Tradeshow, and to supplement my other expenses while volunteering in the shop. The FAIR Shop did not pay me during my placement, so any leftover funds from the Pickup Award contributed towards food and transportation costs. Read Ysabella's Bursary report
