Accretion Plate Probing and Repeat Surveying

Site 1: South Malling Church (OS: 412109)

Plate Location 1

  • Upper estuary.
  • Approximately 12km up river of mouth.
  • East bank of river - very fluid and thus quite dangerous.
  • No. of plates required: 3 (too dangerous to place more).
  • No. of extra canes in transect: 0 (too dangerous to place extra).

Site 2: Southeast Lewes (OS: 424093)

  • Upper estuary.
  • Approximately 10.5-11km up river of mouth.
  • Southeast bank of river - on accreting side of meander. Quite stony in places.
  • No. of plates required: 3 (narrow).
  • No. of extra canes for transect: 0 (too narrow).

Site 3: Southease Bridge (OS: 427054)

Plate Location 3

  • Middle estuary.
  • Approximately 5.5km up river of mouth.
  • West bank of river - straight section.
  • No. of plates required: 3 (narrow mudflat).
  • No. of extra canes for transect: 2.


Site 4: Piddinghoe Moorings/Church (OS: 435032)

Plate Location 4

  • Middle estuary.
  • Approximately 3 to 3.5km up river of mouth.
  • West bank of river - on slight meander.
  • Extensive mud flats and small amount of salt marsh in mooring area.
  • No. of plates required: 5 (wide mudflat).
  • No. of extra canes for transect: 4.

Site 5: North of Industrial Estate at South Heighton (OS: 444025)

Plate Location 5

  • Lower estuary.
  • Approximately 2.5km up river of mouth.
  • East bank of river.
  • Extensive area of mud flat, in places perhaps a little stony.
  • No. of plates required: 5 (wide mudflat).
  • No. of extra canes for transect: 2

Site 6: Northwest of Denton Island (OS: 443018)

Plate Location 6

  • Lower estuary.
  • Approximately 2km up river of mouth.
  • West bank of old meander which has been cut off from main flow of the river.
  • Extensive mud flats with specific mooring areas.
  • Number of plates required: 5 (wide mudflat).
  • No. of extra canes for transect: 3.

Site 7: East Denton Island (OS: 446017)

  • Lower estuary.
  • Approximately 1.5 to 2km up river of mouth.
  • West bank of river.
  • Number of plates required: 3 (narrow mudflat).
  • No. of extra canes for transect: 3.



Site 8: South Denton Island (OS: 446015)

Plate Location 8

  • Lower estuary.
  • Approximately 1.5km up river of mouth.
  • North bank of old meander which has been cut off from main flow of the river.
  • Number of plates required: 5 (wide mudflat).
  • No. of extra canes for transect: 1.
