Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) |
ECRE aims to promote the protection
and integration of refugees in Europe and is an umbrella organisation
of 78 refugee-assisting agencies in 31 countries working towards
fair and humane policies for the treatment of asylum seekers
and refugees. It engages in advocacy work primarily on EU asylum
policies and practices. It publishes a range of research and
policy papers with analysis and recommendations on various aspects
of EU asylum policy including integration, rights, return, legal

Rights Watch |
As part of its broader human
rights agenda, Human Rights Watch engages in advocacy on refugee
issues. Its website has a variety of reports, backgrounders
and other documents about the situation of refugees, IDPs and
asylum seekers in both northern and southern countries that
can be downloaded directly from the website. It also has a refugee

Network on Displacement and Resettlement |
This is a global
network of research and practitioners (in universities, development
agencies, governments, non-governmental organizations) working
in the field of population displacement and resettlement, especially
on issues of development-induced displacement - including those
involved in crafting policies and mitigation methods, conducting
research and developing theoretical models to mitigate the damages
to these victims. The website does not seem to be fully developed,
but has a brief summary of and links to the policy frameworks
on involuntary displacement resettlement of international organisations
like the World Bank and links to a variety of organisations

Policy Group (MPG), Brussels, Belgium |
The Migration
Policy Group (MPG) is an independent organisation committed
to policy development on migration and mobility, and diversity
and anti-discrimination in Europe by facilitating the exchange
between stakeholders from all sectors of society. Its 'Policy
Monitors' section contains summaries and analysis on progress
with various areas of migration policy at national level and
European Community level e.g. asylum, illegal immigration,
family reunion, racism and xenophobia, visas and border controls,
anti-discrimination legislation. It also produces the monthly
'Migration News Sheet', which covers all major European developments
in the fields of immigration and asylum policies, asylum-seekers,
controlled migration, irregular and illegal immigration, racism
and xenophobia, and issues arising out of the process of integrating
ethnic minorities. You can sign up to this on the website.
MPG's publications section also contains a number of reports
and articles on these issues which can be downloaded.

The Migration Policy
Institute (MPI) is an independent, non-profit think-tank in
Washington, D.C. dedicated to the study of the movement of people
worldwide. MPI aims to provide analysis, development, and evaluation
of migration and refugee policies at the local, national, and
international levels. MPI's work is organized around four research
themes: (1) Migration Management; (2) Refugee Protection and
International Humanitarian Response; (3) North American Borders
and Migration Agenda; and (4) Immigrant Settlement and Integration.
Its website describes the aims and details of these research
programmes, has a (relatively limited) news sections on migration
policy developments worldwide (mainly US and EU) and a publications
section organised by year, where short articles can be viewed
online and policy briefs and longer reports can be donwloaded.
It also manages Migration Information Source (see online

Refugee Council, UK |
The Refugee Council is the
largest organisation in the UK working with refugees and asylum
seekers. It provides a variety of practical information and
documentation in 12 languages directly for refugees and asylum
seekers and for organisations and advisers working with refugees
and asylum seekers. It also publishes briefings, research reports,
policy papers and commentary on different asylum issues and
policies and the situation of refugees and asylum seekers in

op-eds, articles and reports on crisis- and refugee-related
issues ranging from humanitarian relief, child soldiers and
reconciliation to IDPs, refugee protection and repatriation.
American-style advocacy, but publishes quite frequently in the
US media, so useful for those who want to examine advocacy in

Refugeenet was the website of the EU Networks
on Reception, Integration and Voluntary Repatriation of Refugees,
which was funded by the European Commission until 2000. It aimed
to develop networks on refugee integration themes such as education,
language, vocational training, health, reception and voluntary
return. The website still contains a few publications on these
themes which are available to download plus references to books

Southern African Migration Project (SAMP) |
The Southern African Migration Project is a multi-faceted research, policy and training programme designed to facilitate the formulation and implementation of new initiatives on cross-border population migration in the region. The Project, which began in May of 1996, is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID). SAMP has four main components: applied migration research, policy advice and monitoring, migration training and public education. During the period 1996-99, the primary focus was on cross-border migration to South Africa. However, from 2000, the program has acquired a more regional character. http://www.queensu.ca/samp/ |

Committee for Refugees (USCR) |
The U.S. Committee for Refugees (USCR) publishes
the Annual World Refugee Survey, a report reviewing refugee
conditions and government policies affecting refugees and displaced
persons in 134 countries worldwide. You can download the latest
country reports and statistics from the 'Worldwide Refugee Information'
section of the website (both country of origin and settlement).
You can also find links to news articles and reports by country
or issue. This is a very good starting point for basic information
on refugee issues and conditions by country of origin and settlement.
