Following three months of lockdown, research groups in the Sussex Programme for Quantum Research (SPQR) are thrilled to be allowed back in their labs again to get on with their vital research, and have made a video to share. 

PhD student Shobita Bhumbra said: “I am so pleased to be back to my research on using quantum sensors on biological samples. It feels comforting to be back after so long away.”

A huge amount of work has gone into setting up new protocols and procedures to minimise the risk to staff and students. Shift systems are being maintained, handwashing regimes are in place, new hand-sanitising stations have been set up, more PPE has been provided, and symptom notification policies have been drawn up.

Professor Peter Krüger, Director of SPQR, said: “We are beyond excited to be opening up the labs again, with up-to-date health and safety measures in place. A lot of work has gone into the preparations, but those who choose not to or are unable to are in no way expected to return yet. The health and safety of the team comes first. That being said, we love our work and are so keen to get started.”

Many groups have found innovative ways to keep their research going whilst working from home. 

The interdisciplinary teams are returning to a host of lab-based research, ranging from work on electrical vehicle batteries to quantum computing, and from nanomaterials to medical imaging.

The SPQR labs are among a number of research laboratories on the University of Sussex campus that have re-opened in recent weeks, following government guidance that people who cannot work remotely are encouraged to return to their places of work.
