On the Record - Hanani Aslam interviews Emma Green and Will Powell about the School's new student podcast
On Monday 8 March, a group of students from the School of Media, Arts and Humanities launched a student-led podcast called On The Record…with MAH. The podcast was set up when four students - Emma Green, Will Powell, Sara Roesch, and Saskia May - met each other as Student Connectors for the School. They were tasked with aiding student wellbeing and creating a sense of community, and they came up with the idea to start a podcast.
“We’ve got around 40 brilliant students working on different episodes at the moment” says Will Powell. It is a space for students to discuss whatever they like and to express themselves.
"From the serious to the silly, we welcome all ideas", says Emma Green.
The first episode celebrated International Women’s Day with a discussion about women in art. Episodes will be released each week on Monday and Wednesday on Spotify and Soundcloud. The topics they cover range from this year’s Grammys, conspiracy theories, the role of arts in the modern world, and more.
With such a diverse team of students they are using different skills from a myriad of courses to create the podcast. Emma, an American Studies and Film Studies student, says she’s “pulling information from lots of different areas and disciplines. At the same time, studying film has honed my analytical skills. Both skills are vital when trying to schedule podcast episodes!”
Will, an English and Film Studies student, adds, “I think the diversity of our courses has been what’s helped us the most. I think that variety has kept us from boxing the podcast into being just a movie review show or a book club. It’s a place for everyone in the School to express themselves, which is nice.’
Both Emma and Will, along with all the producers, editors, and contributors, are hoping the podcast will help create a connection between students and the School. Will hopes that listeners will see that “we’re part of a larger community of students open to exploring each other’s interests and passions, not just isolated windows in a Zoom call.”
They hope that listeners are engaged with each other’s interests and be entertained by the segments the podcast will cover.
“We’d love it if the podcast became a cornerstone of the School, continuing on for years to come!” says Emma.
The next episode of On The Record… with MAH will be out next week on Monday 15 March so keep an ear out for that!
