Call for Papers: Collective Action and Political Representation Workshop on May 20th 2025
Collective action can be a powerful tool for marginalized groups and their allies to challenge the status quo and drive societal changes. Collective action often emerges from grassroot movements in response to perceived injustices. The success in bringing in change depends on contextual factors, like the political system and power imbalances, as well as social disparities, such as inadequate representation in the political sphere. This workshop aims to connect researchers across different disciplines who are conducting research on collective action and/or political representation at the University of Sussex.
We invite submissions for blitz talks (5 to 10 minutes) that address in the broadest sense the following questions:

What are the social and psychological processes and mechanism that drive collective action?

What are structural/systemic affordances that promote or obstruct collective action and/or representation?

How does representation influence the formation and trajectory of collective action and vice versa?

What are the societal consequences of lack of representation and collective action?
We welcome submissions that explore these questions empirically or theoretically or both, examine the construct at various levels of analysis (i.e., individual, group, local, national, global), use multiple methods (i.e., quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods) and disciplinary perspectives. We especially encourage PGRs and ECRs to apply. The workshop aims to provide a space to share research and research ideas, to connect with peers and engage in fruitful and constructive conversations across departments and disciplines at the University of Sussex.
