Staff Mentoring Programme: Effective Skills for Mentors

Target audience: All staff (Academic and Professional Services) interested in becoming a mentor. This workshop can also be utilised as a refresher for current mentors.
Mentoring is a powerful method of professional development that can benefit individuals across all job roles and functions, within any department or discipline.
This workshop explores the core skills involved in mentoring and provides insights on ways to develop and practice an effective mentoring approach utilising an established model. It will also give an overview of the Staff Mentoring Programme at Sussex, the benefits of being a mentor, chemistry sessions and the importance of effective contracting.
Aspiring and established mentors at the University can also benefit from joining the Community of Practice for Mentors (CoP) which provides a space for peer-to-peer development. More information on the CoP will be provided in this workshop.
Learning outcomes:
• Understand the definition of mentoring at Sussex
• Explore mentoring skills in the following areas - qualities of effective mentors, chemistry sessions and effective contracting, active listening, effective questioning and TGROW model.
