Hot Topics! A Reading and Discussion Group
Tuesday 14 November 17:00 until 19:00
University of Sussex Campus : Silverstone Building 302
The next meeting of the Hot Topics! termly discussion group is approaching, in which we frame a discussion around current conversations relevant to SexDiss members, based on recent, non-academic writing. It will be a hybrid session, meeting on Tuesday, November 14 from 5-7pm in SB302 and on Zoom (please email c.jeffries@sussex.ac.uk for the Zoom link). Snacks and hot and cold drinks will be provided (though please do bring your own mug if you would like to make a hot drink).
This term, the theme of our reading and discussion session will be LGBTQ+ digital media and activism. We will read a piece on the way in which Twitter/X has become increasingly unsafe for trans and queer users of the platform, and contemplate the ways in which LGBTQ+ communities are finding and carving out other spaces online and using other media forms more as a result. We encourage participants to bring to the discussion their own ideas of digital/media forms that are being utilized more by trans and queer people following the hostile changes to Twitter/X over recent years.
No reading is required to attend and take part in the discussion: we envisage this discussion group as one which requires little to no preparation for participants, in amongst everyone’s busy schedules. However, our suggested readings are:

And a slightly older piece which anticipated this:

In this and every session of Hot Topics!, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, racism, ableism, and classism will not be tolerated.

We look forward to seeing you there soon, and to being in regular conversation together about pressing and important Hot Topics relevant to the Sex Diss community.
This will be a hybrid meeting. To join us on Zoom, please write to c.jeffries@sussex.ac.uk for the link.
