The University of Sussex has been ranked 218th in the latest QS World University Rankings 2024, released today (Tuesday, 27 June 2023). This result sees the University climb 22 places on last year, out of 1,500 leading institutions globally.
The University of Sussex performed most strongly in the newly-added sustainability category, with a score of 97.2 out of 100. To achieve this score, the University was ranked based on its environmental impact, which looks at how the University is building a sustainable institution, engaging with relevant and impactful research and embedding sustainability in the curriculum. It was also ranked based on social impact, which looks at equality, knowledge exchange, impact of education and employability.
This year’s rankings saw an increase in the international students category where the University’s high proportion of international students places it 100th in the world, with a score of 93 out of 100.
The University was also ranked 9th in the UK for citations per faculty, which highlights the impact and quality of research produced by Sussex academics.
Professor Sasha Roseneil, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Sussex, said:
“I am pleased to see the University of Sussex rise so significantly this year in the QS World University Rankings 2024.
“As a university that is deeply committed to sustainable development and to addressing, through our research and teaching, the profound environmental threats facing our planet, it is incredibly encouraging to have been acknowledged so clearly for our sustainability efforts.
“Sussex is a radically global university, warmly welcoming students from around the world, and with alumni from over 160 countries, so we are also delighted to perform highly in the international students category.”
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the QS World University Rankings and introduces an updated methodology, whereby the rankings are decided based on an institution’s performance in nine categories, compared to the previous years’ six.
The new categories include international research networks, employment outcomes and sustainability, which are considered alongside the previous six categories; academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty and international students.
Earlier this month, the University was also named as one of the top 50 universities worldwide and 10th in the UK for the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2023.
