Professor Liz James
A new group of Fellows has been welcomed to the British Academy for 2024, including Professor Liz James, Professor of Art History and currently Interim Dean of Media, Arts and Humanities here at Sussex. The British Academy is the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences, consisting of over 1,700 leading minds in these subjects. The Academy is also a funder of both national and international research, as well as a forum for debate and public engagement.
Liz has been at Sussex since 1993. Her area of expertise is the Byzantine Empire (c330-1453 CE) and the non-western medieval world, with a particular interest in mosaics, which you can see on her Medieval Mosaics website.
Liz said: “It is an honour to receive this Fellowship, and it is always a joy for Byzantine studies to get some form of recognition. I am grateful for the support of colleagues and especially students over the years who have brought themselves to do modules involving Byzantium and/or mosaics.”
Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost Michael Luck said: “Sincere congratulations to Liz on her Fellowship, which is richly deserved, and a true mark of distinction. This provides recognition of her longstanding teaching and research contributions, as well as her passion about, and knowledge of, the world of Byzantine art. I’m delighted for her.”
