As we mark Sussex Library’s 60th anniversary, we’re celebrating six decades of knowledge-sharing, community, and innovation with a special exhibition. Chapter 60 invites you to explore the Library’s journey from its founding to today, reflecting on our shared history and looking forward to the future.
Visitors will step back to 1964, with the Library’s official opening ceremony. Each decade since then is brought to life with unique gallery displays, highlighting significant changes, achievements, and moments that shaped our community.
One exhibition case includes comment books capturing a wealth of memories, conversations, and lively exchanges between Library staff and visitors—many familiar to long-time members. The exhibition will also feature a dedicated poem Notes Inside a Library by Sussex alumna and poet-in-residence for 2024, Jenny Mitchell. Attendees are also invited to share their own stories and reflections, creating a collective tapestry of shared experiences and fond memories.
We welcome staff, students, and the local Brighton and Hove community to be part of this celebration. Come and honour 60 years of learning, connection, and community-building within Sussex Library.
When and where
The exhibition runs from Wednesday 13 November to Friday 20 December in the Library’s Open Learning Space, BN1 9QL. The Library is open to external visitors from 9am-7pm daily.
