A University of Sussex academic has been elected to a prestigious role at the UK’s leading charity for literacy.
Jo Tregenza, Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Sussex, has been named the new Vice President of the United Kingdom Literacy Association.
Formed in 1963, the UKLA aims to promote good practice and raise standards in literacy.
Jo has been a trustee of the UKLA since 2018 and has been elevated from her previous role as Convener for Web Publications.
Being named Vice-President is the first step to her taking on the role of President in three years' time.
An English consultant with 17 years’ experience, Jo previously worked as a Primary teacher for 10 years in Brighton and Hove, West Sussex and Oxfordshire.
She said: “The UKLA is the leading subject association for English in the country and has significant international impact and so I am really honoured and delighted to be taking on this position.
“By becoming Vice-President I shall be following in the footsteps of several significant figures in the literacy world. I hope to use the role to continue the focus of the UKLA on quality research, to ensure pupil’s voices are heard when we consider what makes quality teaching of literacy."
