On 22 April 1993, at the age of 18yrs, Stephen Lawrence was killed in a racist attack by a gang of white men. He didn’t know his killers and his killers didn’t know him. 

In 1998 a public inquiry was held into the handling of Stephen’s case which led to the publication of The Macpherson Report. This is now considered one of the most important moments in the modern history of criminal justice in Britain and has led to cultural changes and changes to law and police practice. Stephen’s story has also paved the way for increased understanding of discrimination in all forms and new equalities legislation.

The Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation describes Stephen’s story as ‘both challenging and inspirational’. Stephen was a normal young person whose life was short; Stephen provides a positive role model of a life well lived.
