LGBT+ History Month 2024
Posted on behalf of: EDI Unit
Last updated: Thursday, 1 February 2024
LGBT+ History Month is celebrated in schools, universities, workplaces and communities all across the UK every February. Launched in 2004, LGBT+ History Month holds space for claiming the past, celebrating the present and creating futures.
This year’s theme is ‘Under the Scope’ and focuses on LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to the field of medicine and healthcare both historically and today.
Look out for the Pride flag, which will be flying over Sussex House throughout February to mark LGBT+ History Month.
Upcoming events at Sussex – taking place this February
For all staff and students
On Thursday 1 February, the LGBTQ+ Staff Network hosted an event with the visiting speaker Vaneet Mehta, author of Bisexual Men Exist.
For staff: LGBTQ+ Staff Network
The LGBTQ+ Staff Network arranges events and activities through the year, and provides an informal network of LGBTQ+-identified staff. Many of their events are open to all staff, and some events are also open to students. To find out more or to join the network see the Staff Networks page on the website.
For LGBTQ+ students
The Students’ Union is offering support to student groups planning activities for LGBT+ History Month, and is offering a small grant of £150 for related activities.
The Life Sciences Student Experience Coordinator has teamed up with Psychology, MPS and Engineering to organise an event for LGBTQ+ students on Friday 23 February from 1pm-3pm in Bridge Cafe. Look out in student communications for more information or contact: E.Winstanley@sussex.ac.uk.
Organising something for LGBT+ History Month?
Schools and departments across the University are creating information articles and organising events.
If you are organising an LGBT+ History event or activity in your school or department that you would like us to publicise through the EDI web pages, or you would like to discuss your ideas further, please email: edi.unit@sussex.ac.uk.
