Remembering Science Policy Pioneer, Professor Peter Senker

The academic community mourns the loss of Professor Peter Senker, a political economist and distinguished figure in science policy and technological innovation, who recently passed away at the age of 90. For over three decades, Senker was a cornerstone of the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex, where his work on technological change and its societal impacts left an indelible mark.
Joining SPRU in 1972, Peter led the Technology and Skills Group, contributing significantly to the understanding of how new technologies affect skill requirements. His mentorship shaped the careers of many prominent researchers and policymakers. Even after his formal retirement, Peter continued to influence the field as a Visiting Professor at the University of East London and through his extensive publications.
Peter’s legacy is celebrated by colleagues and students alike, who remember his commitment to interdisciplinary research, mentorship, and his unique ability to make complex ideas accessible. His contributions to science policy and his dedication to addressing real-world problems will be remembered for years to come.
