Abstract:
Large-scale and long-term shift in weather patterns and rising global temperatures pose risks to health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, human security, and economic growth. The UK Catapult Network, publicly funded technology and innovation centres, aims to strengthen the UK's innovation capability in various sectors, such as health, space technology and energy. Some of the catapults directly support the transition to net zero, e.g., the Energy Systems Catapult (ESC).
This talk examines how ESC business support incorporate good practice in the transition to net zero particularly within incubation, acceleration, and financial start-up and scale-up provisions. It explores whether these practices are sector-specific or can be adapted to other industries. Analysis draws on policy and strategy documents review, semi-structured and unstructured interviews with business support practitioners and strategy insight managers.
Initial findings suggest that business support interventions within Catapults are expectedly ‘traditional’, focusing to help new ventures to start up, scale up and succeed in acquiring funding. However, some observable practices can be classified as innovations in support of Net Zero. These are predominantly in the selection process (challenge calls); in regulations and standards support; the catapult’s expertise in renewables energy, carbon capture and storages, hydrogen and bioenergy, tackling barriers; and helping businesses with sustainability data; and make them more likely to secure funding (Triple Bottom Line)
