‘Made in Ethiopia’ film screening and panel discussion
Join us for a free screening of award-winning documentary, ‘Made in Ethiopia’ followed by an expert panel discussion.
Described as a "nuanced, sobering and subtle film" by The Guardian UK and “an absorbing study” by the Financial Times, the documentary explores the complexities of China's foreign direct investment (FDI) in Ethiopia.
Seen through the eyes of a Chinese factory boss and two female Ethiopian workers, we witness the challenging realities of China's FDI activity within a factory in an industrial park in Addis Ababa. With the factory promising to provide tens of thousands of jobs to Ethiopians, the pressure from local communities deepens and cultural clashes are revealed.
‘Made in Ethiopia’ is written and directed by Max Duncan and Xinyan Yu; it shows how films can be used as social change tools to deepen engagement around emerging issues in developing countries.
An expert panel will discuss the implications of China’s FDI in Africa, the global south, and other issues raised in the documentary. The panellists include:

Professor Stephan Manning is the facilitator of this event, co-organised by the University of Sussex Business School and the IDS.
