Abstract:
This presentation, based on a forthcoming book chapter, traces the institutional historicity of the field of accounting research, specifically concentrating on how the ‘journal politics’ underpinned the methodo-theoretical and empirical trajectories of the field of accounting research. After tracing the historical trajectory, the presentation will concentrate on the epistemic challenges that this ‘historical baggage’ imposed upon the ‘history of the future’ of accounting, especially in the light of the emerging ‘sustainability’ agenda. The presentation will be especially useful for emerging scholars to understand how and why differences in the methodo-theoretical stances of accounting researchers are underpinned by the ‘institutional politics’ in which they operate, providing them with an opportunity of critically engaging with the contemporary institutional politics that shape our future research endeavours.
