The National Student Survey (NSS) 2022 results were released last week and see Sussex moving up one place to 61st in the Overall Satisfaction ranking, versus 62nd last year.
Sussex was also ranked first in the country with 100% satisfaction in two areas: English Language and Linguistics, and Art History.
While the Overall Satisfaction ranking is positive news, Sussex is currently working towards our target ranking of 25th place.
Sussex’s score for the survey question “Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course” is 75.7%, which has risen by 0.7 percentage points from last year and compares with a sector average result of 75.5%. The University has also climbed 7 places in the ranking for student voice and 9 places for assessment and feedback.
The outcomes of the NSS 2022 will be used in the UK league tables and are expected to inform student experience indicators for future TEF awards. Both have an influence on reputation and recruitment.
The results and feedback from this annual survey are also vital in shaping the student experience here at Sussex.
Interim Vice-Chancellor David Maguire said: “Moving up one place is good news for us all at Sussex. The fact that we have climbed seven places in the student voice category is something we should be proud of, and I know colleagues have worked very hard to respond to student feedback.
“The Survey shows that there are pockets of excellent practice here at Sussex, but in aggregate the overall score is far from where we would have liked it to have been and there is clearly more work for us to do as an institution. By filling in the survey, students help other students make an informed decision about their choice of course and university.”
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students, Kelly Coate said: “Whilst we are striving towards a higher overall ranking, the feedback and results reflect the positive continuing work across our community, such as providing more opportunities for students to give feedback with mid-module surveys, which has been reflected in the scores for Student Voice.”
The NSS covers final-year undergraduates at all higher education institutions in the UK and was completed this year by 61% of Sussex finalists, a decrease from last year (66%).
At Sussex, the survey ran from Monday 10 January to Saturday 30 April 2022.
More detailed results will be released by the polling organisation Ipsos-MORI in due course.
