The Student Centre – accessible to all

Students will be able to enjoy the Centre’s welcoming and inclusive spaces from 25 April when it opens for its ‘soft’ launch. Once the doors open it will be a great place to meet other students, and study individually or in groups. The variety of spaces in the Student Centre means that you can find spaces where you can discuss ideas and talk with friends whilst other spaces lend themselves to more quiet working and calm.
It fully opens in September 2022, when it will become the go-to place for students to access face-to-face information, advice and guidance services on campus.
Designed with accessibility and inclusion as its core, the Student Centre has one of the few Changing Place Toilets in Brighton and Hove. Unlike standard accessible toilets, which are designed for independent use, a changing place facility provides sanitary accommodation for people who require the assistance of a carer.
The changing place facility at the Student Centre contains:
- a height-adjustable, adult-sized changing bench
- a ceiling track hoist system
- a disabled toilet with a handrail
- a privacy screen
- a washbasin
- and a shower,
This facility will be useful for students who live both on and off campus and require the support of a full-time carer.
According to the Changing Place campaign, there are only seven other toilets of this type in the Brighton & Hove area.
As well as a ‘heat and eat’ area where you can make a hot drink and warm up your lunch and facilities for you to buy refreshments, facilities in the Centre also include multi-purpose learning spaces for individual and group study, a double-height performance and event space, confidential meeting rooms and a beautiful, peaceful, courtyard garden to enjoy.
A range of student events are being planned for the summer term and all students are welcome to start using the Centre from April 25.
