In 2020/21 we appointed four academic leads to support delivery of Inclusive Sussex, our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy.
Our leads have made a fantastic contribution in moving us from strategy into a delivery phase and we want to thank them and recognise their work. Emile Devereaux (LGBT+) and Naaz Rashid (Race) stood down over the summer.
We are delighted that Miguel Maravall (Gender) and John Walker (Disability) are still our academic leads have remained in post this term and that Kevin Hylton, who is with us until the end of the year, has taken on the role of academic lead for race this term.
We have made significant progress since the publication of Inclusive Sussex and the University is now looking for new EDI leads to support David Ruebain our newly appointed Pro VIce-Chancellor (Culture, Equality and Inclusion) to fill the vacant roles and replace those standing down at the end of this term.
The new EDI leads will play a key role in translating our high level commitments into delivery of our roadmaps, achieving transformative outcomes over the next few years. The successful candidates will lead cross University teams collaborating to ensure that we deliver against actions we have committed to and identify actions required for areas of further improvement.
The successful candidates will have an understanding of the equalities landscape, particularly in a higher education context, leadership and facilitation skills and passion to support and take our work forward. We are keen to have as diverse a pool as possible for the role and therefore open up the roles to all staff currently employed at the University who can demonstrate they have the relevant knowledge and experience for the role and meet the person specification.
EDI Leads are released for 0.2 FTE from their substantive role. How this time is managed will be determined in conjunction with the appointee’s Head of School or Divisional Director. The appointments will initially be for 12 months from 1 January 2022. Extension of the appointment may happen depending on circumstances.
Details of how to apply and the timetable for recruitment are available on the jobs page. Links to relevant information for anybody applying are available on our EDI Leads page
We are holding an open information session on Monday 15 November from 10-11am for anybody interested in applying to help you decide if you could be one of our new EDI leads. If you wish to attend please book a place through Eventbrite.
