Do you live on one of these roads?
- The Highway
- The Avenue
- Hillside
- Widdicombe Way
- Upper Bevendean Avenue
- Lower Bevendean Avenue
At the end of the academic year, you may be considering moving out of your private rented accommodation. We wanted you to know about a sustainable initiative designed to help you with your move by collecting unwanted items directly from your house each Monday from June 2024, helping to avoid waste through reuse.
In previous years, we have received complaints about students leaving unwanted household goods or personal property outside of their rented properties. We understand this could be due to time constraints or limited access to recycling and reuse options. So, we hope by contacting you now, you can begin to plan your move out and start considering recycling and reuse options.
Why is it good to get involved in this initiative?
By donating your unwanted items, you could be more likely to get your deposit back, reduce the stress of your move, and can avoid the impacts that leaving out items can have on neighbours and future tenants.
You can also make your move out more sustainable, giving your items a second life, reducing the amount going to waste, and giving other people access to cheap, quality items.
What can you do?
In a collaborative effort Brighton and Hove Council, Brighton and Sussex Universities, JOINT Living and Co-Apt have joined with British Heart Foundation to provide a street collection service to help you dispose of items, such as those listed below, sustainably.
- Clean kitchenware
- Clean clothes
- Shoes
- Accessories
- Books and stationery
- Small working electricals
Collection dates:
- Monday 1 July
- Monday 15 July
- Monday 29 July
- Monday 12 August
- Monday 2 September
Please leave in a sensible position that is visible from the road for the British Heart Foundation to collect but make sure it is not obstructing the pavement.
If you have slightly larger donations that won’t fit in a bag, please leave them outside with a note saying, ‘For British Heart Foundation Collection’ on the morning of a collection day.
We hope you will join this scheme to make your move easier, help the community around you by moving out considerately, and avoid any complaints from the local community.
If you are moving out of your private sector house and do not live in the trial area, it is important to consider your community responsibility. You should show respect for those living around you and care for the community you have been part of during your time in the private sector. The property should be left clear of unwanted items and excess rubbish. Find out more about how to clean the premises when you move out.
If you have any questions with regards to moving out or your private sector house, please do get in touch with the Private Sector and Community Liaison team.
