This summer, 692 bags of abandoned or donated items were saved from landfill, and given to the local British Heart Foundation group.
This is a huge increase on 2022, when we donated 437 bags after student move-outs.
As part of a joint effort between Sussex Estates and Facilities (SEF) and the Sustainability team, we work with our local partners at the British Heart Foundation every year to donate unwanted items as student residents move out for the summer, primarily clothes and miscellaneous bric-a-brac such as books and gadgets.
In addition to donation boxes set up in all residences, a large number of abandoned and unwanted items are collected after the end of the Spring Term each year. As part of our sustainability goals to reduce our carbon footprint and minimise waste sent to landfill, these items are sorted through and separated for re-use and donation.
