I warmly invite you to a showing of the works created throughout my practice-based PhD titled Sonic Palimpsest: Listening (in)between layers of sound. My PhD examines how the concept of a palimpsest can be extended to cast new light on composition of sonic art and musical works that sound materials from multiple sources and contexts
About:
The collected works present conceptual and practical explorations of sonic palimpsest: a creative/compositional methodology for uncovering, engendering, and privileging cyclical and non-linear processes of sonic erasure, overwriting, and re-articulation. Sonic palimpsest methods are interrogated through sound installation, digital audio composition and performance, where I engage creatively with the inherent materialities of sounding objects; online sound archives; digital audio processing; de/reconstructive acts; and musicking with electronics. The works explore the realising of multilayered, trans-temporalities that blur the lines between sonic acts and actors of past/present, and outlines approaches for listening (in)between layers of distinct yet interlinked sounds. The project aims to reframe key tenets of palimpsest scholarship and considers their critical and creative implications in relation to sonic authorship; temporality; musical materiality, memory; absence/presence; and real/imaginary.
