BIO

I am Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication at the School of Media, Arts and Humanities.

My research interests are in the relationship between discourse, politics and society. I was recently PI of an ESRC funded project on the television framing of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum (2015-2016; ESRC Future Research Leaders scheme). I have also worked on research on the future of media industries in the digital era. My work has been published in a range of journals and my monograph, Framing Referendum Campaigns in the News, was published in 2018 by MUP.

I currently work on discourses on and about digital technologies, including the discourse of YouTube content creators, policymakers' and ordinary people's discourses on internet regulation.

I am a Fellow of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts). I served as Convenor of the SMCA (Scottish Media and Communication Association) between 2013-2017.

I joined Sussex University as Senior Lecturer in 2017. I had previously been Senior Lecturer at the University of Stirling. I have also worked at Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde Universities. I completed my PhD in media studies at Stirling University in 2010, and I also hold an MA from Stirling and a BA from the University of Athens. Before the academy, I worked in the communications industry for several years.

I have supervised PhD research projects on political communication in the Quebec and Scottish referendums; press-state relations in India; public diplomacy in moments of national crisis; and sense-making in organisational change in Malaysia.

I welcome PhD proposals on any of the topics under the 'research expertise' section of my profile above.
