BIO
Can Kocak is an Assistant Professor in Media and Cultural Studies, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). His teaching spans a variety of subject areas, covering media and communications theories, as well as media law, journalistic ethics, and journalism practice.
Kocak's research focuses on the discourse within and surrounding media texts – including film, television, music, and new media – exploring how they generate new forms of paratextuality and transtextuality. He also investigates how these texts serve as case studies to illuminate evolving practices of doing (creation), being (identity), and audiencing (engagement).
Before adopting a career in academia, he had over 6 years of experience as a copywriter, copyeditor, and communications professional in multiple digital agencies as well as the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, where he worked as the Editorial Coordinator for the Istanbul Design Biennial.
His non-academic articles on culture and politics have been published in outlets such as vesaire.org, ayrim.org, and Tribune.
