Network Replacement Programme – what’s complete and what’s coming next?

The Network Replacement Programme (NRP) team have made good progress over the summer break - running surveys, digging trenches, and installing ducting in preparation for the installation of new network cables and equipment from early 2024.
The programme is still on track to provide a modern, fast, reliable, and secure wired and wireless network across the campus by August 2025.
What to expect in the Autumn term
As we welcome students back to campus and the Autumn term begins in earnest, work on the programme has continued to ramp up.
Trenching and ducting work around the campus to enable new fiber installation is continuing, with work on the Southern Ring Road expected to continue moving eastwards until later in October. Works will then move on towards the Freeman building between late October and early December and into the Cooperative Childcare Centre car park and bin store (adjacent to Freeman) from the beginning of October until the end of December.
Work on the Eastern Ring Road will continue northbound from its current location, reaching the junction with Estates Road in the middle of December before continuing along the southern section of Estates Road (adjacent to the Hastings building) until the end of the same month.
Appropriate traffic management will remain in place wherever necessary and disruption is expected to be minimal.
Work inside buildings
Activity inside buildings has also begun to pick up as the team begin to conduct surveys ahead of more significant work to the fabric of in-scope buildings such as removing redundant wiring, installing new cabling, and upgrading IT equipment rooms.
Survey work for priority buildings has already begun and is expected to continue until November. The more significant internal works are expected to begin before the end of the year.
Both survey work and work to the fabric of buildings will take place in carefully managed phases. Some short periods of disruption are expected, and the team will do their best to keep these to a minimum.
The team will be in touch well in advance of works taking place in your building. They’ll let you know exactly what is planned and how this is likely to affect you so that you can plan around the work effectively.
