On Friday 4th October, Sussex’s Centre for Social and Political Thought and Intellectual History and Sussex’s Philosophy Society will host Dr Jonathan Benson (University of Manchester) for a talk on “Affective Polarization and the Aptness of Partisan Anger” (abstract below).
The talk will be held in Arts A108 on the University of Sussex campus from 3.30pm-5pm.
All are welcome to attend.
Abstract: This paper challenges the predominant assessment of affective polarization as inherently harmful and unreasonable, arguing that partisan anger is often normatively appropriate. It shows that partisan identity is a potential source of reasonable emotions and considers the conditions under which affective polarization is more or less likely to be apt.
