We describe a new approach for trapped-ion quantum computing based on the application of global radiation fields and voltages applied to individual gate zones. Using this technique we demonstrate a two-qubit quantum gate producing a maximally entangled state with fidelity close to the fault-tolerant threshold. This quantum gate also constitutes a simple-to-implement tool for quantum metrology, sensing and simulation. The work is published in Physical Review Letters.
