Focusing was originally a psycho-therapeutic technique developed by Eugene Gendlin at the University of Chicago. Gendlin was interested in why psychotherapy did not work better. His research pointed in the direction of how important the attitude of the patient was, over what the therapist actually did, in the process.
Presented here in the form of a meditative practice in a format similar to mindfulness sessions, something of the flavour of Focusing is offered. A key emphasis is on the 'felt sense' or bodily feeling evoked by a given problem situation. Paying attention to that felt sense is an important aspect of moving forward toward real change.
We follow a six-step meditation with a period of silence between each step. The steps are based on the scheme presented in Gendlin's seminal work entitled 'Focusing'.
