Public Lecture: Isabel Rivers 'The Pilgrim’s Progress in the evangelical revival'
Monday 21 November 18:00 until 19:30
Arts A1
Speaker: Professor Isabel Rivers
Part of the series: Sussex Lectures in Intellectual History
Professor Isabel Rivers (Queen Mary, University of London) will deliver our second Sussex Lecture in Intellectual History of the year entitled 'The Pilgrim’s Progress in the evangelical revival'.
John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, first published in two parts in 1678 and 1683, was to become the most popular religious work in English after the King James Bible. This lecture will explore its fortunes in the evangelical revival of the eighteenth century: how it was made into a polemical text in the battles between Arminians and Calvinists; how it was used for pastoral purposes, both in print and in society meetings; and how it became a means of writing the history of dissent and evangelicalism.
This lecture is free to attend and open to all. It is hosted by the Sussex Centre for Intellectual History.
