This week in 1965 – Shawcross becomes Chancellor

A meeting of Court in September 1965 elected Lord Shawcross as Chancellor of the University, replacing the late Viscount Monckton.
Shawcross, who held the position for 20 years until 1985, remains the longest-serving Chancellor in the University's history.
In 2009, one of the campus buildings - Engineering 1 - was renamed Shawcross in honour of the late Chancellor, who died in 2003 aged 101.

Election of Chancellor
The Court of the University at a meeting on Friday, 24th September, 1965 elected The Rt. Hon. the Lord Showcross [sic]. P.C., Q.C., LL.M., LL.D. as Chancellor of the University in place of the late Viscount Monckton of Brenchley. Lord Shawcross was a Pro-Chancellor of the University, and has been for the last five years Chairman of the Buildings Committee.
