Enabling change

It is always special when we learn that a Sussex alumnus has remembered the University in their will. Honouring their wishes through a project that directly benefits our students is not just meaningful—it’s deeply rewarding.
We were privileged to receive one such gift from Micheal Turner, a passionate amateur dramatics enthusiast who joined Sussex as a mature student, studying Education from 1987 to 1992. Micheal’s generous legacy funded Creating Voice, a project designed to help first year students find a sense of belonging at university, especially those from underrepresented groups, such as estranged students.
Transitioning to university life can be challenging, so Creating Voice offered a four-week series of workshops for students that incorporated a range of creative practices. Students explored specific topics such as ‘home’ and ‘identity’ through the medium of photography, creative writing, soundscapes, as well as music playlists and performance—giving them a new, interactive way to share their thoughts, experiences, and emotions.
The impact and value of the work was profound, as underlined by those who took part:
"It has been so vital and healing to have a space to reflect and unpack the exhaustion, heaviness, joy and everything else that comes with the first year of university... We all expressed how important this time has been and how needed this is.”
Another participant said: "It was a really relaxing and inspiring process, and I enjoyed how it forced me to make time for myself to reflect on my university experience and feelings."
The Creative Voice sessions culminated in ‘This is Home,’ an exhibition showcased at the Brighton Fringe Festival in May 2024, offering students the chance to share their creative expressions with the wider community.
We are so grateful to Micheal – and for all the support the University has received through gifts left in wills. These legacy gifts have the power to create lasting change for Sussex students by supporting scholarships, advancing research, enhancing community services, and promoting social equity.
We would like to recognise the commitment and foresight of all who have chosen to pledge a gift in their will to the University, which also grants them membership of The Helena Normanton Society.
