Navigating the challenges of a heritage campus 

The Library was one of the first buildings opened on our original campus in the 1960s and was granted Grade II* Listed building status in 1993.  

Iconic in its stature and collections, the Library is a place to study, research, and work. Beyond its collections, it hosts exhibitions, seminars and workshops - it’s a crucial resource for students.  

Challenges 

As one of our original campus buildings, the Library presents physical challenges. Pre-dating both building regulations and the Equality Act, its main entrance is via a large external staircase, with a diversion at a gentle gradient around the building’s perimeter to reach the step-free entrance.  

As a listed building, the Library is also subject to stringent planning regulations. Permission is required to make even small changes to the building, adding both cost and time to each planned improvement. 

In 2024, planning permission was granted to build a new step-free Library main entrance via a lift directly from Library Square. Although the justification of the project hasn’t changed - it is very much needed - the University’s current financial position means that we are unable to progress at this time. It was a difficult decision to make, but due to the significant costs involved and the current financial constraints, it is not possible to build at this time. We will continue to explore ways to retain this planning permission, which is valid until 2027, to create an accessible Library main entrance.  

What help is on offer? 

The Library’s step-free entrance is available to the side of the building. Plans are underway to improve this entrance, making it wider and moving the access button to a better location. This is due to take place in summer 2025   

Once inside the Library, it is significantly easier to move around with wide walk ways and lift access to all floors.
