The commissioned artwork will celebrate the history of Sussex. Placed on Sussex Lawns, the artwork will become an integral part of a new green area inspired by original campus landscape architect Dame Syliva Crowe, whose ‘green core spine’ – a line of trees and soft landscaping that runs through the centre of campus - is being re-established in West Slope.  

The artwork will enhance the public realm. Placed between our new Health and Wellbeing Centre and new supermarket, the area will be visited by students, staff, visitors and the local community alike.  

It will be a celebration of Sussex and create a sense of place. We are looking for a functional artwork that honours local biodiversity and our neighbouring South Downs National Park, promotes wellbeing, and incorporates local, traditional, sustainable materials and skills.

Sussex has a rich tradition of Public Art on campus, from Ivon Hitchens 1960s mural Day’s Rest, Day’s Work, to Turner Prize-winning artist Helen Cammock’s recent installation, whisper tones vibratefoundations, it’s a privilege to be commissioning a new and lasting artwork that will be enjoyed for decades to come and become part of our campus story.’

How to get involved

We are inviting artists to express interest in creating our new artwork by midday on Tuesday 8 April. 

Shortlisted artists will then be invited to prepare a proposal of their idea, which will be exhibited on campus for the community to view, ahead of the final Artist being commissioned in June.

West Slope 

West Slope is set to transform the north quarter of campus with just under 1,900 new student bedspaces and new student amenities. In addition, a new Health and Wellbeing Centre will open in 2026, offering NHS GP services to the local and student community, placing student wellbeing at the heart of campus.  

The Public Artwork commission and installation is a planning requirement of the West Slope development. The final artwork will be selected by the University in collaboration with Brighton & Hove City Council.
