The Sustainable Sussex Car Benefit scheme will soon have a greater choice of vehicles for eligible University staff. With a target date for launch being the end of February 2025, you will be able to offset some of your salary before tax in exchange for a pre-loved/second-hand electric or plug-in hybrid car provided by Tusker.

The Sustainable Sussex Car Benefit scheme will enable you to choose a pre-loved car from returned lease vehicles, either when leaseholders wish to change their vehicle part way through or at the end of their lease period. This choice benefits our staff by providing:

• more affordable Ultra Low Emissions Vehicles for a more sustainable way to commute to work
• a quicker turnaround time between order and delivery as opposed to some new ULEV vehicles which have a waiting time if they are not ordered from stock.
• ability to support individual and University sustainability goals more by not always having to lease a new ULEV.

Other benefits of the Sussex Sustainable Car Benefit scheme for leasing pre-loved cars are the same as for new ULEV’s including fully comprehensive motor insurance, servicing, routine maintenance and repairs, breakdown cover and MOTs - and there’s no deposit.

You can access the scheme in the usual way by Visiting the Tusker site to create an account, using your employee number (found on your payslip) and our company code TUOS.

Once the pre-loved option goes live, you’ll be able to log in, and provide your salary details so that you can view affordable vehicle options for you, you’ll then be able to click on the ‘pre-loved vehicles’ button to see the cars available via this option. Importantly, since these are one-off available cars there will be a need check the site regularly and to make a decision, completing all paperwork within two days, as opposed to the usual quote with 14 days to decide for new ULEV car leases on offer for our staff.

Most electric cars can travel 200-300 miles between charges, and there are more charging points regularly being installed across the southeast. You could be eligible to have one installed at home through the scheme. So, take a look at what’s on offer and consider a fossil free drive to work which could be more affordable than you previously thought.

Are you eligible?

Permanent employees with over three months’ service are eligible for the car scheme. If the monthly cost of the car would cause an employee to drop below the National Minimum Wage and Living Wage, the application will be rejected.
