The Library has recently unveiled its new café space, injecting colour and life into a previously sterile area of the building. Steeped in natural light from its glass ceiling this new space offers users a place to take a break from work in a vibrant and cosy atmosphere, with a variety of spaces for both individuals and groups.
The space has been designed and installed by the Library Operations team who, with a passion for sustainability, elected to use only second-hand, deadstock and existing furniture. This decision allowed for an eclectic design reminiscent of independent coffee houses found within Brighton and the surrounding areas. The approach was also in reaction to the recent focus around value for money and by purchasing used items the overall costs for the install were minimal.
Library users seem very happy with their new space, with one saying “I like how rustic it feels, it was too plain before. It feels like a warmer more welcoming environment”. Library Director Jane Harvell said “By using more creative approaches we are thrilled to still be able to offer our users new and welcoming spaces even in these challenging financial times.”
