The Network Replacement Project (NRP) team is pleased to announce the successful completion of a crucial phase in the campus-wide network upgrade. The installation and repair of underground cable ducts marks an important step in the delivery of a modern, high-speed, and secure network for the University.

Between June 2023 and January 2025, Project Manager Jovan Popovic, along with contractor Landbuild and their Site Manager Ian Sweetman, supported by Ian’s son, Harley Sweetman, managed the installation of over 3000 metres of new ducting across the campus, alongside essential repairs to existing ducts. These ducts will carry just some of the 136km of fibre optic cabling necessary to connect the University’s new network infrastructure. To put this into perspective, that’s the same as the distance from Falmer to Dieppe!

Julie Hamilton, Project Director for the NRP, said: “This is fantastic news for the project and the University. Jovan and the team have worked exceptionally hard to deliver this critical part of the project without which we couldn’t connect our new network together. While there is still much work to be done, this milestone is a significant step toward providing our students with a fast, efficient, and secure network and Wi-Fi experience.”

The Network Replacement Project is a major part of our Capital Programme designed to overhaul the University’s network infrastructure. The goal of the project is to provide students, faculty, and staff with a state-of-the-art, high-speed, and secure network and Wi-Fi system. This upgrade will ensure that the University’s network infrastructure is fit for the demands of modern academic and research activities.
