Times Higher Education (THE) has today (Wednesday 22 January) released its World University Rankings by Subject, which builds on the THE World University Rankings annual rankings, and categorises the performance of universities in 11 broad subject areas.
Sussex has two subjects in the top 100 and six subjects in the top 200 of this year’s rankings: Social Sciences is ranked =70th and Psychology 77th. Business and Economics, Physical Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Law are all in the top 200. Arts and Humanities, and Physical Sciences, have returned to the top 200, and Medicine and Health, and Engineering and Technology have also improved their positions, as has Psychology.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sasha Roseneil said: “I am very pleased to see Social Sciences and Psychology in the top 100 globally in this important ranking which plays a significant role in students’ choice of university, both locally and internationally. With six subject areas in the top 200 in 2025, this is our best performance in the THE World University Rankings by Subjects in recent years.”
About the rankings
THE World University Rankings by Subject are issued on an annual basis, a few months after the overall rankings.
The rankings are based on the same five core pillars as the THE World University Rankings: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International outlook, Industry. Teaching and Research Environment both draw reputation data from the THE Annual Global Academic Reputation Survey.
The number of institutions being ranked by THE tends to increase on an annual basis which can affect others’ overall positioning.
