Travel Survey – what happens next?

In December 2024, over 1,500 students and staff took part in a Travel Survey, telling us how they get to and from campus, and sharing their views on sustainable transport initiatives. All the prize winners have now been contacted - thank you to everyone who took part.
So what happens next? The Travel Survey data is currently being analysed by external transport consultancy, SYSTRA, and will be used to create a new campus Travel Plan.
What is a Travel Plan?
A Travel Plan is a transport management strategy which includes transport initiatives and targets to minimise the impact of travel to and from campus on the environment and includes measures to encourage sustainable travel.
Why do we need one?
A new Travel Plan is planning requirement of the West Slope development and will be submitted to Brighton & Hove City Council for approval ahead of our first new buildings opening next year.
A Travel Plan is a planning requirement, but it’s also good practice, and will support our work to make campus more sustainable. Rather than creating a Travel Plan solely for the new West Slope development as was required, we have extended its remit to cover our entire campus, to maximise the opportunity to encourage sustainable travel alongside sustainable developments.
The new Travel Plan also supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 11 – Sustainable cities and communities. You can read more about our work on the SDGs here.
When will it be ready?
SYSTRA is currently analysing the results of the Travel Survey and will use the data to create measures and targets centred around encouraging sustainable travel to and from campus. The Travel Plan will be created in collaboration with our West Slope and Sustainability teams and will then be submitted later this year to Brighton & Hove City Council for approval.
