Dan Sumner, a senior lecturer in English language teaching in the Department of Language Studies, gave a presentation on the English for Refugees Scheme at the Ukrainian Refugee Programme Impact Day in the Hove Town Hall Council Chambers last Friday 13 December.
The event was a celebration of the ‘Homes for Ukraine Scheme in Brighton and Hove’ and of the collaboration between third sector delivery partners with Brighton and Hove City Council, detailing the impact they have had on the local Ukrainian community in Brighton and Hove. The event included presentations from former University of Sussex student Colette Batten-Turner, the founder and CEO of Conversations over Borders, Brighton and Hove LGBT Switchboard, Stand for Ukraine and many other partners.
There was also a performance by the Ukrainian Voices Choir. Three members of the choir are current or former students at the University of Sussex, one of whom, Anastasia Zheleznova, is a graduate from the English for Refugees Scheme.
