Social science in the policy room (revisited)
Friday 29 November 13:00 until 14:30
Online
Speaker: Jane Calvert – University of Edinburgh
Part of the series: SPRU Freeman Seminar Series
Abstract:
In 2007, Andrew Webster published ‘Crossing boundaries: social science in the policy room’, a paper that explores the ways in which STS and innovation studies researchers can contribute to science policy. Inspired by Webster’s paper, in this presentation I draw on my experiences as an STS researcher in various policy rooms in the field of synthetic biology. I explore the opportunities these spaces provide for intervention, as well as their constraints and limitations. After reflecting on whether there is or should be a normative orientation that drives social scientific work in science policy, I give examples of how I tried (and arguably failed) to challenge narrow framings of innovation and encourage institutional reflexivity in the policy room.
