A common stereotype of university life is that it revolves around clubbing, that students go to the clubs most nights of the week. For many, this simply is not true, be that for financial reasons, academic commitments, or for it just not being something that they particularly enjoy. There are many other activities that you can engage in, allowing you to have a break from academic commitments and connect with others. Here are some activities that I’ve enjoyed:
-
Going to the beach: It always feels extremely relaxing sitting at the beach just watching the waves. This time of year is really peaceful to go because there are less people there. You can go by yourself or with friends.
-
Visiting various attractions: Sussex has a lot of beautiful landscapes and different places to visit. In Brighton, there is the Brighton Pavilion Museum which showcases a lot of beautiful architecture.
There is also a lot outside of Brighton too; I recently went to Monk’s House- the house of a famous writer, Virginia Woolf- in Rodmell village, near Lewes, with my friends. The house had a lot of history to it and the staff there were very knowledgeable; it also had beautiful gardens as well as being surrounded by a landscape that put us in awe. Next on my list to visit are Eastbourne and the Seven Sisters. -
Going for a walk in the lanes and the North Laine: The lanes and the North Laine have a lot of stalls and shops, selling a lot of unique items that you may not find elsewhere. They’re also perfect for Christmas shopping, especially with the Christmas lights put up.
-
Sea Life Centre: I recently blogged about the Sea Life Centre in Brighton, the oldest aquarium in the world that continues to operate. It contains a lot of historical architecture and marine life, giving you an opportunity to appreciate both.
-
Societies at University: I talked about the benefits of joining a society in a previous post. There is a society for pretty much everything at University and if there isn’t something you’re interested in, you can set up a new society! I am currently part of dog-walking society that involves taking dogs out for walks from owners based in Brighton and is an opportunity for exercise, socialising and some dog therapy!
-
Going to cafes: there are man ydifferent cafes across Brighton, ranging from small, independent ones to large chain cafes. My friends and I have enjoyed going to gelato places including Sprinkles, a walk away from the beach. On campus, there are also some cafes; I enjoy going to Room 76 (located in Falmer House) and getting bubble tea. Room 76 has a really lovely atmosphere and at night turns into a bar with various offers on cocktails.
-
Churchill Shopping centre: it is fun to go shopping here with many different clothes shops including H&M and Bershka. There are also some great places to eat.
There are many more that I have not listed; these are just a few of the activities that do not involve clubbing. University is an opportunity to try out new activities and see what you enjoy; there is more to university than going out partying contrary to stereotypes.
