The University and Sussex Uni Food have launched a new project supporting the Down Syndrome Development Trust (DSDT) – ‘Relish’ the Bagel Food Van Micro Business Project.

Relish is run by the DSDT along with young people and adults aged 16-25. The project aims to provide learning opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities while offering a unique culinary experience and educating the campus community on inclusivity and kindness.

The Down Syndrome Development Trust

The DSDT, based at the Sussex Innovation Centre, has been supporting individuals with Down Syndrome and their families for over a decade. Through providing services, specialised interventions, short breaks, and a plethora of opportunities, the Trust has been helping young people flourish. 

Nationwide, it offers consultancy to families, schools and support groups. The charity plays an important role in improving outcomes in education, sports, social skills, and the overall life of its members.

A new chapter in campus partnerships

The bagel van joins projects like the Social Learning Hub and Lending a Hand, which succeeded with the help of Sussex students, like you. 

The Relish venture aims to empower participants and foster inclusivity, while educating customers on how to engage with individuals with learning disabilities and the benefits to all when we do this.

"Projects like this are beneficial to everyone involved. We invite students to help our members make meaningful contributions to society whilst the young people in return can teach them the benefits of being patient and present in the moment…", says Senay Smallwood, DSDT Managing Director.

Empowering opportunities

Experienced staff manage food safety, inventory, and customer service, while young participants improve their skills and make connections. 

As their confidence grows, they’ll take on more responsibilities such as stock ordering and finances, learning entrepreneurship and gaining independence.

Senay Smallwood said: "We're excited to have installed our bagel van on campus, offering our members the chance to learn, build new skills, and join the community. Our mission is to create meaningful experiences while promoting inclusion and an understanding of the needs and talents of individuals with learning difficulties.

"This unique opportunity will allow young people with learning disabilities to be part of university life, expanding their horizons and feeling valued. With the support of Sussex students, this project will help us thrive."

Simplicity in focus

Relish has simplicity at its heart. The Trust invites students to support this special cause with an open mind.

Head over to Relish, based at the Bramber House lawns, open between 10am-2.30pm, Thursday to Friday this term. Enjoy large, fluffy bagels, with a variety of toppings including whipped cream cheese, mozzarella, tomato & pesto, banana & peanut butter, and more! Drinks and snacks also available.
