We recently took to the @SussexUni Instagram to ask you for your best eco-hacks. Here are a few of your highlights:
Getting around
Lots of you mentioned walking and cycling to get around. Not only is it great for the planet, but it’s also good for your health and wallet.
Meanwhile, buses and trains are greener for the planet than driving, and give you the chance to look over your lecture notes on your way to class.
Reduce waste and recycle
When it comes to reducing waste, students had some clever tips. Turning leftover veggies into soup is a tasty way to cut down on food waste. Another smart idea is saving the water used while the shower is heating up to water plants.
Recycling everything possible might not technically be a hack, but it helps keep stuff out of landfills. That’s why we covered recycling at University in our Help us make Sussex more sustainable article!
BYOB (Bring your own bottle)
Using reusable items was a big theme. Lots of you suggested bringing reusable coffee cups and water bottles to avoid single-use plastics (again you'll find the details elsewhere in this edition!)
We also got shout-outs for other reusable versions of single-use products, with particular mentions for reusable cotton pads, period pads, and menstrual cups, all of which can help reduce waste.
It’s great to see so many creative and practical eco-hacks from students. Let’s keep the momentum going and continue to find new ways to live more sustainably.
