All staff members at the University are required to complete a number of mandatory online training courses which help keep you, and all our staff and students, safe. The training is essential to ensure you have the knowledge and skills for your role, make sure we have a safe and healthy working environment and enable the University to meet the legal obligations which govern our workplace.

From Wednesday 31 July, all staff will receive automated email reminders from LearnUpon, our eLearning platform, to help ensure everyone completes the training required. Automating our HR processes is one of the ways we are delivering our aim to improve the employee experience and bring consistency for staff at Sussex as part of our People Strategy.  

We are also introducing an additional mandatory training module for all staff: Safeguarding Essentials.  

About your mandatory training modules 

The following online training modules are mandatory for all staff. They must be completed within one month of joining the University, with the exception of GDPR which must be completed within two weeks of joining:  

• GDPR (Data Protection)  
• Diversity in the Workplace (Equality Act 2010)  
• Health & Safety Essentials  
• Fire Awareness  
• Safeguarding Essentials  

Refresher training is also needed for some modules as the certification expires after a period of time. Further role-specific mandatory training may also be required for certain staff.

Mandatory training is important to ensure you have the information and skills needed to work safely, do your job effectively, and remain compliant with laws and regulations. Your manager will discuss your training completion as part of your Achievement and Development Review (ADR).  

Reminder emails for all mandatory training 

From Wednesday 31 July you will receive automated reminder emails from LearnUpon to flag any outstanding mandatory training. You will also receive reminders for any refresher training needed for certain modules. 

The email reminders will be at set intervals, at least a week apart, to provide you with time to complete your training. Once all your training is complete, reminder emails will stop.
