With ADR conversations coming into full swing over the next few weeks, would you like to learn how to coach others in a way that brings out the best in the people around you, helping to empower others and improve professional performance? The University is committed to growing a coaching culture for the future, and the Organisational Development team are keen to support staff interested in coaching.
Coaching involves leading in a non-directive manner, helping individuals learn through deep listening and reflective, open-ended questions, rather than providing instructions, advice, or suggestions. Effective coaching is future-focused, unleashes potential, and enables transition, transformation, and change for business improvement.

Join the Coaching Professional Level 5 Apprenticeship Programme.
Programme Overview:
The Coaching Professional Apprenticeship Programme is a 12–15-month initiative designed for University of Sussex staff aspiring to develop and enhance existing coaching skills and achieve a qualification that leads to professional accreditation.
The programme focuses on developing coaching capabilities and covers key themes and modules, including:
- Who you are and what is coaching?
- Developing practical coaching skills
- Becoming an expert coach
- Developing client capability
The programme is funded through the Apprenticeship Levy so there is no financial cost to the individual or their department and the training combines live workshops with self-paced learning. Participants will gain practical experience by coaching volunteer coachees and engaging in peer coaching with observed feedback.
Successful completion leads to nationally recognised qualifications, a Higher Apprenticeship Certificate and the Level 5 CMI Coaching Qualification.
Professional Recognition:
The programme also aligns with professional recognition from:
- European Mentoring and Coaching Council for Accredited Coaching Practitioner.
- The Association for Coaching for Accredited Coach.
- The International Coach Federation for Associate Certified Coach.
Eligibility and Commitment:
The programme is open to academic, professional services, and technical staff who have completed their probationary period and are on a contract that covers the duration of the programme. Please ensure you meet the eligibility criteria as stated on the Staff Apprenticeship Webpage.
- Requires a minimum commitment of 6 hours per week
