It feels like only yesterday that I came into Sussex with a confused look on my face and Google Maps as my navigator. When my network failed, I sheepishly asked a passerby: “Please, where is the Student Centre?”
Our first classes were filled with questions, uncertainties, curiosity, and funny encounters. I remember opening the Canva design app when other students opened the Canvas student App on the first day of my lectures. I scrolled through the design app the entire lesson, cluelessly nodding along to what the lecturer was saying and praying not to be questioned. Hey! don’t laugh… too much. Pause, think about what your first day at Sussex was like. Now, look how far you have come. Congratulations, you are a Shining Star!
While the congratulations are beginning to pour in from friends and family, some of us are beginning to ask the important and scary question: What Next?
In this blog post, I share a few tips on how to navigate our post-graduation journeys as graduates of the University of Sussex.
1. Implement learnings from your experience as a Sussex student
Beyond academics, Sussex has taught us many skills ranging from communication, cultural sensitivity, speaking, networking, interpersonal skills, and many others. As we progress into the next phases of our lives, we mustn't leave these skills behind us at Sussex. Everywhere we go, let us carry along the lessons we have learned, let these soft skills shape and guide our daily lives and relationships with others.
2. Explore your options
Graduation opens a world of possibilities and it’s important that you do not limit yourself. Whether it is job hunting, entrepreneurship, voluntary work, further education, or internships, consider options that align with your interests and can enhance your knowledge and sharpen your skills.
3. Get professional qualifications
It is great that we have acquired a degree from the prestigious University of Sussex. However, the world keeps evolving even after our degrees. Therefore, it becomes vital for us to put our best foot in the competitive job market. Does your desired discipline have a professional certification? Now that you are preparing to graduate from Sussex, perhaps it is time to look into that professional qualification that will help you stand out.
4. Develop new skills and be flexible
One of the many things Sussex prepares students for is the ability to solve problems. Continuous learning is essential to provide stellar solutions. Do not be too rigid with knowledge and never be comfortable with what you know now because, in a few years it may or may not matter. Train yourself to always seek after knowledge. Learn skills that are in high demand such as data analysis, cybersecurity, digital marketing or even project management. Take online courses and attend seminars, training, workshops, and conferences. Always be willing and determined to learn, unlearn, and relearn consistently.
5. Maintain relationships
Higher education institutions are one of the places where people can meet lifetime partners and friends. Look at you, you have amazing friends that you have made over the years of your study at Sussex. You have met several staff members of the University, some of whom have made a remarkable impact on your life. Now that it is officially over, make a conscious effort to stay in touch with your friends and lecturers. You never know which contacts will lead you to the opportunities you want.
6. Never walk alone
At Sussex, you are never alone. You do not have to navigate life after school on your own. You can either sign up and reach out to other alumni through Sussex Connect or book a one-on-one session with the career team. As a Sussex Alumni, the University provides you with career guidance and access to the Career Hub for up to three years after your graduation. Take advantage of the all-round support the university provides its alumni. Why spend five years trying to find your feet when you can spend just five weeks if you seek help? Reach out to people who have gone ahead of you for help. Work in teams with like-minded graduates who are navigating life after school just like you.
7. Take care of yourself
While career planning is important, don’t forget to consider your personal life and well-being. Think about where you want to live, your work-life balance, and how you’ll continue to grow personally and professionally. Pursuing hobbies, maintaining social connections, and taking care of your mental and physical health are crucial for a fulfilling life. Consider life beyond work and breathe. Sussex is home. So, remember that you can always reach out to the university for support. Once a Sussex, always a Sussex.
Congratulations on your graduation from Sussex. I am excited to find out where life will take us all next.
