The University of Sussex has been ranked between 101 – 200 of universities across the world, in the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings for 2024, published on 12 June.
This is the sixth year of the rankings and the fourth of Sussex’s participation. The rankings measure the contribution of universities to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
An additional 372 universities took part in this year’s rankings which saw Sussex ranked 101-200 in the world out of 1,963 institutions, with a score of 88.4 out of 100. Sussex was ranked among the top 50 globally for SDG 17, which considers global partnership for sustainable development.
Sussex’s top three scoring areas - which, along with SDG 17, make up the total score - were:
-
SDG 12 - Responsible consumption and production - score 82.8 (ranked joint 83 of 825 institutions)
-
SDG 13 - Climate action - score 78 (ranked joint 29 of 924 institutions)
-
SDG 16 - Peace, justice and strong institutions - score 77.8 (ranked 101-200 of 1,086 institutions)
-
SDG 17 - Partnerships for the goals - score 92.9 (ranked joint 45 of 2,031 institutions).
Head of Sustainability, Matt Montgomery, said: "The THE University Impact Rankings were more competitive than ever, with 372 new entrants this year.
"We scored well on research and our overall results, which are based on our 2021-22 data, have highlighted the areas where more work is needed. The good news is that we are taking action on this right now, with significant funding set aside for our ambitious Sustainability Programme to invest in our campus and its buildings.
“We are focusing on a number of “quick wins” which we will talk more about very soon, as well as growing our Sustainability team to help us decarbonise our existing campus infrastructure. In addition, the Vice-Chancellor's proposal for our new Sussex 2035 strategy, which goes to Council for approval in July, seeks to place environmental sustainability and human flourishing at the heart of what we do for the next decade, to make a transformative difference to our University and the world."
