The Business School recently hosted a significant European Partnership Development visit with representatives of the University of Warsaw in Poland, aimed at fostering collaborative research, teaching, and student exchange initiatives.
This two-day event, held on May 16 and 17, brought together academics from both institutions to discuss and develop partnerships in key areas of economics.
The first day began with a welcome reception and refreshments, followed by an introduction from Dr. Matthew Embrey, Deputy Head of Economics at Sussex, along with Professors Gabriella Gotkowska and Dominika dos Santos Gadowska, Deans from the University of Warsaw.
Sessions were collaborated on and delivered by faculty from both Business Schools, covering topics such as economic development, political economy, conflict, global health, family well-being, and international trade. Presentations were given by academics from both universities, followed by panel discussions.
On the second day the focus shifted to student exchange, and curriculum development, with introductions led by Professor Farai Jena, and the Head of Department for Economics, Sambit Bhattacharyya.
Sessions focused on undergraduate economics programmes, featuring panel discussions and presentations on each institution’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Staff were able to share and gain insights into the other’s student offerings.
Prof Sambit Bhattacharyya, Head of Department for Economics at the Business School said:
"Since the 1990s, Sussex and the University of Warsaw have enjoyed a fruitful partnership, producing notable alumni like Mateusz Szczurek, former Polish Finance Minister and current Associate Director at the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development. This visit only stands to strengthen our historic ties and help pave the way for an even brighter future."
This partnership event offered an excellent opportunity for faculty, students, and external businesses to engage with cutting-edge research, explore educational initiatives, and discuss future collaborations between the University of Sussex and the University of Warsaw, encouraging a unique knowledge exchange that will benefit our student population.
